The Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands has commended the National Government’s decision to rearm Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.

In a press conference yesterday, the RAMSI Special Coordinator Justine Braithwaite recommended a 10 per cent re-armament of the Police, and said the program is important to strengthen the capability of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force.

Miss Braithwaite also said the limited rearmament program is reasonable for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force as a sovereign and independent police force.

“I very much commend the Solomon Islands Government for its decision last year to begin a programme of limited re-armament for the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force. The RSIPF has made significant advances over the past decade, but the last key remaining capability gap is the fact that the Solomon Islands Police Force has no lethal capability, it has no firearms. As a sovereign and independent police force it’s important to proceed with a rearmament model.”
