The Rennell Bellona Provincial Assembly is the latest group to express support for the Government’s decision for the staged limited rearmament of the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force, RSIPF.

A media statement from the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, RAMSI, today says this follows a presentation on the project to members of the Rennell Bellona Provincial Assembly Friday last week.

Speaking after the presentation, Rennell Bellona Provincial Premier, Colin Tesuatai said his province supports the rearmament of the RSIPF.

He said this is crucial for the police to do their work more effectively and also to protect themselves and citizens in the country as there are still a lot of firearms out in the communities despite the destruction of firearms after RAMSI arrived in Solomon Islands in 2003.

Premier Tesuatai adds the rearmament idea is also important to boost Solomon Islands’ security against global security threats such as international terrorism and trafficking.
