SIFF cancels Malaysia friendly

Willie Lai.

Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) have turned down an invitation to play friendly with Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur due to FIFA policies, and limited time.

SIFF President Willie Lai says they have opted to play the friendly against Vanuatu and Taiwan.

Lai says under FIFA regulation, a country must only play two friendlies within the international window, this is purposely to consider the fitness of players, and avoid injuries.

He says the invitation is a good offer but the country must also stick to their relationship with Taiwan.

“Our Team is going to play Taipei on the 24th of this months as planned, and we’re are going to play Vanuatu on the 17th before we go to Taipei,” he said.

“In May they are going to the Netherlands , and July they’ll be playing in the Pacific Games, so a 23 member squad has already been named.”
