Ugi cocoa production to increase after farmers receive new farming tools
By Chris Alex
A total of 24 cocoa farmers from Ugi Island have received new wheelbarrows and farming tools.
The tools were funded under a UNDP-funded project aimed at empowering rural women in agribusiness.
They were channelled through a partnership between the Wala and LUKASCO Groups, led by sister Lucy, who also owned a mini chocolate factory at Maepua.
Speaking to SIBC News, Jerry from the Wala Group said their team helped organize the logistics to transport the tools from Nukukaisi to Ugi Island.
Recipients of the equipment and tools are farmers from Suena, Hunuta, Makia, Tawarodo, and Mwanipua.
“This project focuses mainly on rural women who are actively involved in cocoa farming.
“Three women Diana, Catliro, and Lucy are the first to take on this project this year.
“I can see the green light that Ugi will be booming soon in cocoa production. We want to prove that cocoa can still grow here,” he said.
He said while others celebrated the New Year in 2024, his team celebrated planting new cocoa trees; they are now reaching 3,000 plants.
“We will not rely on any Honourable or MPA; we will rely on how best we can help ourselves in Ugi,” Jerry added.
