An Uncle convicted of raping his niece will serve five years in prison.

The uncle stood trial and was convicted on one count of rape, one count of assault causing actual bodily harm and one count of indecent assault.

Handing down the sentence this morning, Justice Emmanuel Kouhota said the accused pretended concern for his niece when he saw her with her boyfriend at the O-Two bus-stop at White river, December 2013.

He took her to his house at White river and forced her to stay in the house with him. He intimidated her and raped her.

Justice Emmanuel Kouhota says what the accused did was wrong in both law and custom.

He said the impact of what he did to his niece will remain with her for the rest of her life.

The Judge sentenced him to five years for the rape charge, six months for assault causing actual bodily harm and one year for indecent assault.

He is to serve all sentences concurrently, meaning he will serve them all in five years, backdated to when he was first remanded in custody.
