The visiting Vanuatu barbarians are champions of the 2018 South Pacific Oil Solomon 7s after beating the Bougainville Black orchids 17 -5 in the cup final today in Honiara.

This is the first time a overseas team has won the tournament as both teams defeated home side clubs, Avaiki , and the Henderson hammerheads to reach the final.

The final was a tough and close encounter as both teams displayed speed and efficient passing , but it was the Barbarians who scored two early tries in the first half through their Fijian imports to lead the game.

The Orchids came out strongly in the second half scoring their only try, but numerous mistakes which were not evident in their previous games proved costly for them as the Barbarians ascored another late try to seal their victory.

Speaking after their win, Barbarians captain Willian Willy says it was a good experience to play and win the tournament.

” The competition here is very tough like we expected, but we gave our best, ” he said.

“Our coach encouraged us to stay humble and maintain our form, and its really good to play against all these teams as well.”

In the other awards, Malaita Subi claimed the plate , and Bellona won the Bowl award.
