The Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) says work has started to ensure smooth and efficient flow of the Kukum Highway expansion project funded by the Japanese Government.

The expansion will see the section of road from the Central Market to the Ministry of Fisheries and Natural Resources along the Kukum Highway improved.

Permanent Secretary for Infrastructure Development, Moses Virivolomo says the dismantling of buildings inside the MID yard next to the Mataniko Bridge is part of the Government’s preparatory work to make way for the road expansion.

Mr Virivolomo says, other utilities like SIWA, SIEA and Telekom are preparing to begin relocating their infrastructure to allow for the road and bridge expansion.

He adds discussions on the relocation of utilities are in progress.

Mr Virivolomo says MID will keep the public updated nearer the date the actual work takes place.

He explains the project will affect the overall traffic flow through Honiara, but measures are being put in place to ease the congestion as the project progress.

These measures on traffic management will be part of the Project.
