A young man in his early twenties will serve seven years in prison for raping a 14 year old girl in January last year.

The man pleaded guilty after he was committed for trial at the High Court.

He was attending a fundraising held at a private house when he told another girl to bring the victim to him at his house.

He met them on the way and told the other girl to leave and convinced the victim to follow him, saying there were other girls going and they can bring her back.

He then grabbed the girl around the neck, and forced her to the ground and raped her.

The 14-year-old girl had struggled and cried out and he threatened to kill her.

During sentencing, High Court Judge Stephen Pallaras said the rape left an enormous emotional impact on the victim from the terror she felt at the time.

He says her relationship with males is now characterised by fear and distrust, because of what happened to her.

The young man was sentenced to serve seven years for the crime taking into account his young age, clean criminal record and guilty plea.
