The Electoral Commission has announced over 2-hundred and 87-thousand registered voters are on the newly compiled Provisional Voters List – of which, almost 6-thousand were multiple registrations.

Chief Electoral Officer, Polycarp Haununu told a press conference today, there were a total of 2-hundred and 87-thousand, 4-hundred and 38 registered voters were listed after the end of the biometric voters registration program.

Mr Haununu adds, the Biometric Voter Registration system detected almost 6-thousand multiple registrations in the list, and this will be subject to revision during the next phase of the registration.

The Electoral Chief also said based on recent census figures and population growth rates, the Commission estimates the electoral population to be at about 339-thousand people.

Meanwhile, Mr Haununu says eighty to eighty-five percent of the country’s eligible voting population turned up to register.

“We are so happy that we can be able to reach about 80-85 percent of voter turn-out who were able to register during that time and 80 percent I think in our view is a big success for this new biometric system.”
