A ban on marine products is currently in place in three communities in west Russell Islands.

They are Karumulun, Marulaun and Baisen communities.

Chief George Hensy of Marulaun village told SIBC, the Marine conservation project is a brain child of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources.

“This program carried out by the Marine and Fisheries or the conservation program aims at conserving our marine resources and now we have fish begining to breed as well as shells and other marine resources are picking up and it has been five years since the program started.”

He added, the ban might be lifted next year.

“We are thinking of lifting the ban maybe next year.”
