A 13-year-old girl from North Malaita has died last Friday while trying to jump off a moving vehicle.

SIBC’s North Malaita stringer John Andrew Kiri reports, the vehicle was transporting a team of players who returned from participating in a soccer tournament held over the weekend at Taba’a, North Malaita when the sad incident happened.

Mr. Kiri says the child tried to jump off the moving vehicle’s bumper but landed head-first on the hard road surface which eventually resulted in her dead.

“So the child was standing on a bumper behind the vehicle and because the vehicle was moving on high speed, between 15-20 kilometres per hour, the moment it went past the child’s home she jumped off the bumper, with her head landing against the road surface causing her to be unconscious. The vehicle stopped immediately while relatives tried to help her and rushed her to the Malu’u hospital but the couldn’t manage to help her as well.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Kiri says the unfortunate incident has sent a strong warning for children be always cautious about their safety when travelling on moving vehicles.

“The death of our 13-year-old child Ms. Gweneth has given a very important lesson or warning and advice for children everywhere not to play along moving vehicles because it’s very dangerous. Always stay away and clear from the roads and vehicles when they are travelling on the roads.”
