24 Petition Cases mentioned before High Court
Twenty- four election petition cases have been mentioned before the High Court.
These cases are in relation to the 2024 parliamentary joint election.
Deputy High Court Registrar Jack Taloifuila confirmed this to SIBC News earlier this week.
He said another two cases will be listed for direction hearing next week.
” As of Monday this week, twenty- four cases have been mentioned while two cases have been listed for direction hearing next week.”
” Directions are basically just hearings where after petitions are filed, the court would list the petition cases for direction hearing to assess the cases. It will then draw up schedules on what lawyers need to do to quickly dispose the cases as petition cases needs to be disposed within 12 months of filing,” Taloifuila said.
Following the closure of submissions for election petition cases last month, a total of 28 election petition cases were filed before the High Court.
Twenty- Six of these were filed against winning Members of Parliament while two against Provincial Assembly members.
Deputy Registrar Taloifuila also confirmed that the two election petition cases filed against the Provincial Assembly Members have been vacated to a later date.
” Petitions filed against the Provincial Assembly Members has been vacated as it needs to go before the High Court Registrar. The Registrar is currently out in the Province so the cases will be dealt with when the Registrar is in town.”
