A man in his fifties, convicted of raping a disabled girl, has been sentenced to 14 years of jail time.

The man, who is a close relative of the victim, raped her on two separate occasions in 2010 and in 2011 in her bedroom at her parents house in Western Province.

He was 46 years of age, while his victim was 18 years old, when the rape was committed.

Justice Stephen Pallaras, who delivered the sentence on Thursday, said the man’s actions were ‘cowardly’.

Justice Pallaras said aggravating features of the case included close family relationship; the age difference; the attack on a defenseless girl; and the accused entered the victim’s home uninvited.
