The Bills and Legislation Committee (BLC) hearing into the Telecommunications (amendment) Bill 2021 has been put on hold due to certain legal and policy issues.

BLC Chair Hon John Maneniaru explains, the bill in its current form has errors that require further amendments.

Mr. Maneniaru says the amendments need to be done before the committee resumes its hearing.

A statement from the National Parliament confirms, the committee has agreed to adjourn hearing until Monday 19th July to allow the Ministry of Communication and Aviation to respond to the committee’s request.

It says the issues were identified during the bill’s consultation with the Director and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Communication and Aviation and the Legal Drafter.

SIBC News understands, the bill seeks to amend the Telecommunications Act 2009 to include provision that requires all SIM-cards to be registered.
