The Forum Solomon Islands International (FSII) suggests a woman should be given the position of speaker of the national parliament.

FSII Chief Executive Officer Benjamin Afuga says his members support the call after learning that the parliamentary opposition has nominated Ms Teasi Sanga for the post.

Mr Afuga assures the country that hundreds of FSII members have openly expressed their support for a female speaker in the 10th Parliament.

He says this is important if the country is serious about change as electing a woman speaker at least allows parliament members’ ability to correct the gender imbalance in parliament.

SIBC News understands Ms Taeasi Sanga is currently the clerk to parliament, a position she held for quite a number of years and is well versed with parliamentary protocols.
