The Director of the USP Solomon Islands Campus has said the number of female students is increasing yearly, describing it as an important factor towards development.

Speaking at the USP Open Day over the weekend, Director John Usuramo said apart from other USP Campuses, only Solomon Islands has a lower number of female students compared to male students.

Mr. Usuramo however, said recent years have shown the gap is decreasing as more females enroll at the USP Center in Honiara.

He says this year, the difference has decreased to 682 students.

“A difference of six hundred and 82 students. In 2014, the difference was 862. So you see the numbers are actually coming down, so hopefully for the next few years we should have a gender balance of 50-50. And this is very important because unless we develop all our two sides of the coin together, we will not have gender equality in all walks of life, in the sectors of our economy.”
