Financial constraints have hampered the community awareness process to reduce waste along the Mataniko River.

Under the Mataniko River Clean-up Rehabilitation Program, community awareness is among components to clean up the river.

This is to inform communities on reducing litter into the river.

But Coordinator of the Mataniko River Clean-up Rehabilitation Program Debra Potakana said, accessing funds from the government has slowed down the program.

“This year we are yet to conduct any community awareness, but we did that last year. I think an issue we are facing is the usual system of funds accessibility from the government, which is slowing down our work.”
