Foreign national dies during investigation

A man believed to be a foreign national was reportedly dead while being transported to the national referral hospital after collapsing inside the Rove detention centre last week.

The man was taken to Rove correctional centre for investigation over immigration matters. He collapsed during the investigation.

He was rushed to the national referral hospital by Correctional Service Officers but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital’s emergency unit.

Meanwhile, the Police Criminal Investigators classify the unfortunate incident as ‘Death in Custody’.

Police Commissioner Mathew Varley said the police investigation unit is examining circumstances surrounding the death.

Commissioner Varley said his officers are assisting the deceased’s family members.

Reports revealed, the man had been living in the Solomon Islands for quite a while and was detained for immigration investigations.

Meanwhile, Acting Commissioner Correctional Services Mr. William Ahia said, his officers are obliged to assist in the investigation as the death happened within the Rove Detention Centre.

He said investigations may start this week.
