Solomon Islands has secured funding for phase two of the current Honiara road improvement project.

This will ensure road sections from west and east of the new Kukum Highway road are upgraded from next year on.

Permanent Secretary Ministry of Infrastructure Development Stephen Maesiola confirmed to SIBC News last week.

He said the Asian Development Bank will fund the road length from Honiara City Council to White River while the Japanese Government will fund the one from Fisheries to Henderson Airport.

Mr Maesiola said government’s overall aim is to have the major projects including the upgrade of Honiara International Airport completed before the 2023 Pacific Games.

“The aim is that changes for the terminal should be complete well before the 2023 Games. This includes the Honiara City Council roundabout and the on at White river, West Honiara.”

SIBC News Online understands, the Japanese Government will also fund the upgrade of the Honiara International Airport.
