The new bus destination signs from the Honiara City Council

To ensure public buses in Honiara are displaying Honiara City Council destination signs and following approved routes, checks on buses will begin next Monday.

Honiara City Mayor Andrew Mua said a one-week grace period was given to bus owners to get their destination sign and business licence, which are among the requirements of a city council ordinance that came into effect on Monday.

The planned bus checks will help to enforce the ordinance and keep vehicles safe for public users, Mr Mua said.

“Any bus that uses a piece of timber to write its destination or doesn’t display the council’s signboard will be removed from the road so that it doesn’t provide services,” he said.

The national police will coordinate the bus checks, and traffic officers and the city council will be involved in initial monitoring.
