Former Finance Minister Rick Hou and his former Permanent Secretary Shadrach Fanega have requested the Leadership Code Commission to defer its proceedings on them until a civil case involving them at the High Court is complete.

The Commission early this month charged Mr. Hou and Mr. Fanega with official misconduct.

This was in relation to the ownership of MV Small Mala and the registration of Small Malaita Shipping Company as their own.

The Commission gave them 60 days to respond to the charges.

But the Commission’s Chair Francis Luza told SIBC News, the lawyer acting for Mr. Hou and Mr. Fanega has written a letter to the Commission requesting they defer the case.

The letter said there is a civil case currently before the High Court against Hou and Fanega, whose facts are similar to the charges the Commission has laid against them.

The letter requested that the Commission delay its proceedings until the High Court case is completed.

It said a two-day trial on the case will be held next month.

Mr. Luza said the Commission will meet Wednesday this week to decide on the matter.
