The National Referral Hospital (NRH) confirms, improving the hospital’s morgue is a top priority.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services says the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) has previously committed to procure and deliver a number of infrastructure, maintenance and expansion projects, including a new morgue, for the NRH.

The Ministry of Infrastructure Development and National Referral Hospital’s Facility Engineers will begin the procurement process for a new morgue as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, NRH Chief Executive Officer Dr Steve Aumanu says, the building will be ready to commence within 6 months, once the procurement process has been completed.

The drawings, budget and bill of quantities for a new morgue at NRH have already been completed.

Dr. Aumanu says the NRH management is prioritizing the building of a new morgue at the existing site this year.

He adds, the NRH is also planning to build a morgue on the new site with a chapel to afford respect to those people who have passed on.

NRH management would like to request the public to reduce overcrowding by congregating at home and only visit their loved ones in the morgue during official visiting hours.

He cautions, space is a challenge and overcrowding can contribute to the spread of diseases.
