A man in his 30s was arrested and remanded in police custody for the alleged murder of his five months pregnant wife.

Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police, Morstin Mangau told members of the local media in a weekly media conference today.

Mr. Mangau warns that women are not to be treated badly as such, but should be well-looked after by their husbands.

“The suspect was dealt with by the Tetere Police with the assistance of the Henderson Police and it is a tragic incident and I want to have husbands or fathers warned that wives are not to be treated badly. Women are in our hands and we have to look after their welfare and not to beat them and we have to look after our wives. The death of this pregnant woman is in the hands of her husband and it is a disgrace to the nation and the community of Solomon Islands as well and Police is prioritising their investigation in this matter to have it put before the Court.”

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast urges the community to be serious about addressing the issue of domestic violence.

“And I think it’s time where the community actually lived up to the rhetoric and lived up to what we’ve been saying and did something about this. Now this is a problem that everyone has to do more on, the Police has to do more on and we will, all the formal parts of the judicial system have to do more, but equally the communities have to do more and get to a point where this is not acceptable, so we have a tragedy on our hands, a tragedy that’s easily avoidable that’s being replicated every day so I am sitting here pleading with people to actually start taking this issue seriously.”

SIBC News understands the incident took place at Kolona village, North-East Guadalcanal, Tuesday this week.
