The Western Provincial Disaster Committee (PDC) has enlisted MV Nikita as one of the vessels helping to deliver relief supplies to cyclone-affected communities in South Ranonga.

Chairman of the PDC, Collin Potakana, told SIBC News that the vessel is transporting up to 1,000 bags of rice to villages from Lale to Mondo, which are among the hardest-hit areas.

He stated that the operation specifically targets remote communities still feeling the effect of the cyclone.

“MV Nikita is aiding us in reaching communities that are challenging to access, and we are distributing up to 1,000 bags of rice to those areas in need,” he explained.

Mr Potakana mentioned that while distribution is ongoing, the current supplies may not be enough to cover all communities at once.

He adds that community support is important in the response effort.

“We have limited manpower on the ship, so we are asking communities to assist with unloading so we can swiftly move on to other villages,” he added.

The relief mission is anticipated to continue throughout the week.
