The Governments of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Solomon Islands have signed a Joint Communique finalising participation of the Solomon Islands in the construction of Melanesian Cable project this month.

PNG Public Enterprise and State Investments Minister Ben Micah and Solomon Islands Minister for Finance and Treasury Snyder Rini have signed the project in Honiara last Sunday.

Mr Micah said this project is a strategic communication data linking Melanesian countries into the international community, which the PNG Government through Dataco PNG Limited is leading.

He says Dataco expects to link Vanuatu into Solomon Islands and PNG through the East Melanesia Cable and into Indonesia and to Asia and Europe through the proposed West Melanesia Cable.

Mr Micah adds Alcatel will be engaged to lay down the submarine cable which will upgrade the current submarine cables in PNG and Solomon Islands which expects to be operational by mid-June 2016.

SIBC News understands the PNG Government expects to meet the Indonesian Power company this month to finalise details of the
partnership.
