Parliament has passed the ‘Solomon Islands Maritime Authority Bill 2018’ last Friday.

The now Act seeks to establish SIMA as a financially self-sufficient organisation with sufficient resources to carry out its functions; facilitate the implementation of international and regional maritime agreements and facilitate the implementation of applicable maritime laws.

It received majority support from Members of Parliament during its second reading and successfully went through the third, passing without amendments this afternoon.

The Act aims to give necessary powers to SIMA so it can regulate and monitor the country’s shipping industry.
