Police have advised the general public to stay at home.

The Acting Commissioner of Police says, the public is advised to stay at home and refrain from coming into town.

Juanita Matanga says this is to restrict movement of vehicles and pedestrians for emergency workers to do their job without disruption.

Vehicle owners and pedestrians are to take note that the new Mataniko bridge is about to close for all vehicles and pedestrians due to its current conditions.

Road diversion and road blocks will be imposed on certain areas within the Honiara town boundaries.

Meanwhile, students at St Joseph’s Tenaru are in need of being evacuated from the area.

An email sent from an official of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development this morning said the Ministry received message from the school that they need to be evacuated immediately.

The email said only dump trucks can handle the roads leading to the school now, but the Ministry does not have any dump trucks at the moment.

The email appealed for immediate action from the National Disaster Management Council.
