Relatives of a young deceased man who was suspected of hanging himself last week in Kirakira, Makira Ulawa Province are urged not to take the law into their own hands as police are still investigating circumstances surrounding his death.

Deputy Police Commissioner Juanita Matanga made the appeal.

“It was an unfortunate circumstance that the situation arose, but the police should be allowed to conduct its investigations. I know that the deceased’s relative may have hurtful feelings and I do understand that especially in the Solomon Islands context, but I appeal to these relatives to allow the police to conduct their investigations.”

She adds, Police Commissioner Frank Prendergast is in the provincial capital yesterday.

“Currently, the Commissioner is in Makira visiting stations there, but I would like to urge the relatives of the deceased to report to the police any important information. The Professional Standards and Internal Investigations Unit is also available should you see that police are not performing their roles. You can also write to us through the office of the Commissioner regarding complaints and we will provide the appropriate response.”
