Solomon Islands is among other countries in the world which have experienced high rates of gender based violence.

Head of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands, Justine Braithwaite made the statement to mark the White Ribbon Day – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, which falls yesterday.

Mrs Baithwaite says this is disturbing as around two-thirds of women in the have country experience violence first-hand at some point in their lives.

She adds, the impact of this on individuals’ lives, well-being of communities and the nation is devastating as it is a human rights, law
enforcement, health and an economic issue.

Meanwhile, Mrs Braithwaite said while the RSIPF is on the frontline in the campaign against family violence in Solomon Islands, RAMSI as a policing mission will continue to provide training, educational tools and logistical support to help the RSIPF build strong linkages with communities to address the issue within homes.

SIBC News understands countries around the world annually remember victims and survivors of domestic violence during White Ribbon Day.
