The Solomon Islands Solidarity for West Papua Group has yesterday held a brief get together to rally support behind West Papua’s application to join the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

A member of the Solomon Islands Solidarity for West Papua Group, Aloysius Erobaea says despite the heavy rain yesterday morning the group managed to get their message out to supporters of West Papua through a small awareness program being conducted.

“Yesterday we get together just to give awareness as well as showing some banners for publicity just to say that Solomon Islands we standing in support with the people of West Papua in terms of their application to join the MSG. I think a major factor affecting the event yesterday is the current bad weather we are experiencing because there should be some kind of displays but due to the heavy rains from the previous nights the program’s been disturbed.”

He adds they will soon look at organizing a public awareness for the general public to really understand what Melanesians in West Papua currently go through to gain political freedom from Indonesia.

“We still have in planning events and an important one we are looking at soon is a public awareness just to make the public hear or view through motion pictures and readings especially on what is actually happened to our brothers and sister in West Papua and what people around the world are doing in trying to help the West Papuans in their struggle for freedom.”
