STUDENT COMPLETED SUSTAINABLE FARMING INTERNSHIP

The Australian New Colombo Plan Scholar Wendy Xiao has completed a sustainable farming internship at Kastom Garden Association.

Wendy is a Bachelor of Science student from the University of Sydney and recently completed four months study on tropical agriculture at the Solomon Islands National University.

Wendy said they are currently working on a program called ‘Demonstration Garden Training’ which has seen them travel to remote villages in the Western and Malaita provinces to conduct training on farming techniques with local farmers.

She adds it was a pleasure learning alongside local students at SINU, and inspired by local students’ hopes, aspirations, and passion for agriculture.

Meanwhile, Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands His Excellency Andrew Byrne said Wendy is the first New Colombo Plan scholar to come to Solomon Islands and he congratulates her on her successes studies at SINU and the Kastom Gaden Association.

Solomon Islands will host a further 78 short-term New Colombo Plan students from four Australian Universities this year.

These Australian Universities includes; James Cook University, Bond University, Australian Catholic University and the University of Sydney.
