Transparency Solomon Islands (TSI) has described Cabinet decision to channel disaster funds through Members of Parliament as of ‘strong political basis’ than humanitarian.

TSI made this statement after receiving information from the provinces that victims are questioning their MPs over the management and distribution of the disaster fund.

The report claimed, affected communities understand their MPs are recipient to the $100,000 disaster rehabilitation funds and they would want to know if this fund was used per its purpose.

The statement said TSI has been informed, only people who have close relations with the MP or have voted for a particular MP were the ones benefiting from the disaster relief funds.

The statement adds, NDMO is the country’s mandated agency established by the National Disaster Council Act to deal with natural disasters by coordinating and administering relief assistance from the Government and other local and overseas donors to the people of Solomon Islands.
