Police are investigating the death of a young girl on Bellona island in Ren-bel province yesterday.

Provincial Supervising Assistant Commissioner of Police, Everlyn Thugea said according to reports reaching police in Honiara, a mentally ill male person allegedly attacked the young girl at Nukumanu village in West Bellona.

It is reported she died instantly.

It is alleged that four other people had also been attacked by the same suspect and are in a serious condition.

Ms Thugea said two community officers on the island had arrested the suspect.

She said Police had deployed a team of officer to Bellona to investigate the incident.

She appealed to relatives of the deceased and injured people not to take the law into their own hands.

Meanwhile a police officer from Bellona Roy Maungatango told SIBC News this afternoon, three of the injured people were slowly recovering while the fourth was in a critical condition at the National Referral Hospital.

Mr Maungatango said the situation was under police control.

“I have announced to the relatives and families involved to allow police to handle the matter so the situation here is calm at the moment. We are so lucky with the help of the community members to calm the situation,” he said.

“I took care of the suspect and my two other colleagues taken care of the injured people until they lifted them all over to Honiara.”

SIBC News understands that members of the Australia’s HMAS Adelaide air lifted two of the victims to Honiara this morning.

Meanwhile the Australian High Commissioner to Solomon Islands His Excellency Roderick Brazier  also thanked them for their assistance.

Mr Brazier said the Australian Navies have treated the victims and they are currently in a stable condition at the National Referral Hospital.
