Bougainvilleans raid Maleai, Shortlands

A village in the Shortland Islands.

Residents of Maleai village, Shortland islands were terrorized early this morning after armed men believed to be from Bougainville invaded and raided the home of a Chinese businessman on the island and allegedly escaped with a hefty amount of cash.

Chief Edward Kingmele from Maleai Village said the attack occured very early in the morning when everybody was still asleep.

“About half past six this morning men from Bougainville landed on Maleai village and raided a home belonging to a Chinese , and removed unofficially I heard was about two hundred to three hundred thousand dollars,” he said.

“They escaped after looting and removing a solar panel.”

Chief Kingmele also said 2 people who received gun shots were currently receiving treatment at Nila Hospital adding, villagers had chased the men away.

He said the villagers woke up and chased the robbers with stones, but they escaped.

The Police Media Unit confirms, officers are investigating the alleged incident with officers being sent from Gizo and Taro Police Stations to assist officers at the Kulitanai Police Post in the Shortlands.
