Recent bus fare hikes for passengers travelling from East Guadalcanal to areas in North Guadalcanal has come under heavy criticism.

SIBC’s North Guadalcanal stringer Dudley Gani says bus operators have recently doubled the normal fares of $5.00 to $10.00 for passengers travelling from town to Tenaru or Fox wood.

He says for those living in the GPPOL area, bus fares have increased from ten to $15.00.

Mr Gani says the people claim the bus fare increase is unjustified.

“They said the new increase in bus fares are unjustified and it will really affect the low-income earners. For instance, a storekeeper who resides at Ngalibiu and travelling to town for work six days a week, has to spend $30.00 a day and $180.00 a week for bus fare alone, which is too much for him.”
