Cabinet has endorsed a paper to give full recognition to the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state.

A media statement from the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet issued this evening says, Cabinet endorsed a paper on the position today.

The paper was submitted to Cabinet by the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade Clay Forau.

Minister Forau says Cabinet was satisfied with Kosovo’s process of democratisation, and the improved relations between Serbia and Kosovo.

He said given the current status of the improved relations, it was appropriate for Cabinet to re-consider Solomon Islands position on Kosovo.

The Foreign Affairs Minister adds, 109 countries, including Pacific nations, Australia and New Zealand recognise Kosovo as an independent state.

Mr Forau said, Kosovo is also a member of the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and the International Bar Association.

He said it is important that Solomon Islands recognize the Republic of Kosovo as an independent state, and to explore the opportunities Kosovo could offer the country.
