COM HAS NEW ARCHBISHOP

The Church of Melanesia (COM) has a new Archbishop, he is the Right Reverend Bishop George Takeli.

The election was conducted by the Provincial Electoral Board of the Anglican Church of Melanesia at Tenaru area east Honiara today.

Speaking after his election today the newly elected Archbishop highlighted three of his main priorities – to establish an active missionary church, establish a strong and effective administration system and to establish a strong investment division for the Anglican Church of Melanesia.

Bishop Takeli will be enthroned on the 17th of April at the Saint Barnabas Provincial Cathedral.

He has succeeded Archbishop David Vunagi who retired September 2015.

The Right Reverend George Angus Takeli comes from Suholo village, Ulawa Island, Makira Ulawa Province.

Bishop Takeli was ordained to the priesthood in 1995 and has served as a priest in the Anglican Church for 16 years before becoming the Bishop of Temotu.

He has undertaken a Doctoral Degree in Theology program at Charles Stuart University in Australia through Pacific College when he was elected as the fourth Bishop of the Diocese of Temotu in August 2009.

The 56 years old holds a Master’s Degree in Theology from the Auckland University, New Zealand.
