The Ministry Environment together with the Ministry of Health and the Honiara City Council have officially launched the “Eco-bag- alternative to plastic bag pilot program” on Wednesday this week . The program is to raise awareness on the impacts of plastic bags, promote eco-friendly bags and reduce the use of plastic imported bags in the country. Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Environment Dr Melchoir Mataki said the focus is to influence attitudes though the availability of technologies to manage wastes.
The Permanent Secretary adds, waste management is a ninety-five percent on human behaviors and five-percent on the use of technologies. The program was made possible through the Japanese Government under the JPRISM project aiming to change human behaviors towards waste management in eleven countries in the region.
