Local farmers in North Malaita have raised concerns that the threats posed by the invasive Giant African Snail and Rhinoceros Coconut Beetle could be detrimental once nothing is done about them.

The farmers said prompt action must be taken to deal with these pests before it is too late.

Their call followed this week’s World Food Day celebrations in Honiara.

SIBC’s North Malaita stringer John Andrew Kiri reports.

“The people asked the Government as to how and why did these two dangerous pests entered the country and now that the pests are in the country, what workable and more effective measures will the Government, through the responsible ministry needs to take in order to control, reduce or even stop the spread of these pests in the country.”
