Malaita Province has announced its intention to establish the sovereign State of Malaita.

Premier Peter Chanel Ramohia made the announcement in his speech during the province’s 32nd Second Appointed Day celebrations in Auki today.

The premier announced that his full assembly has unanimously resolved to pursue the intention for a State of Malaita.

“Therefore, as the political head of this province and in the exercise of our democratic and constitutional right as the duly elected leaders of this province I wish to announce that on Thursday 13th August 2015, the full Assembly of Malaita Province unanimously resolved that we will pursue our intention to establish a sovereign nation of Malaita.”

He adds a special select committee is currently working on a roadmap for further consultations on the plan.

The Premier clarifies that it is only an intention and not a declaration of independence.

He also announced that as of today, the provincial assembly indefinitely suspends all further discussions either on the proposed Federal System or the current provincial government system.

Meanwhile, Pressure group the Malaita Ma’asina Forum (MMF) will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the national auditorium in Honiara this Sunday.

President Charles Dausabea confirmed the meeting arrangement to SIBC News today.

He says the meeting will start at 2 pm at the national museum auditorium.

The MMF President calls on the Malaita public in Honiara to attend the AGM as important issues concerning Malaita Province will be discussed.
