The U.S. Secretary of State says lessons left behind by the marines, scouts and coast watchers who fought in the 1942 Battle for Guadalcanal can be useful for Solomon Islands and the United States.

Secretary John Kerry made the statement at the Guadalcanal War Memorial at Skyline yesterday, during his 4-hour visit to Honiara.

He said so many disputes of today can be resolved if lessons are drawn from those who fought in the 1942 Battle for Guadalcanal.

“But it is clear that if we learn from them and from what went on here, we can summon the spirit and can understand our charge to resolve so many of the disputes and problems that we face today in the same spirit as the marines, the scouts and coast watchers turn the tide of the battle at Guadalcanal. Thank you all.”
