Metal Explosion Patients at NRH; Mother and Son Stable
The metal explosion killed a father and his son.
A statement from the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) said the two injured, a mother and a son are of the same nuclear family, as the two deceased.
“Upon presentation at the hospital, he was immediately resuscitated and stabilised before being taken to the operation theatre where doctors from the surgical and orthopaedic wards conducted examination under general anaesthesia, including removal of foreign objects and damaged tissues including dressing of the injuries. Operating time, was almost 4 hours that ended close to 3am in the morning, before the boy left the operating room for ward recovery,” the statement said.
Following the operation, the boy is now stable and making good progress.
“The mother, sustained minor laceration to her left knee, and a major fracture of the right femur. She had surgery to stabilise the fractured bone the day after admission and is also in a stable condition. The general surgeons and orthopaedic surgeons are currently managing both the mother and her son.”
The National Referral Hospital Management and staff would like to convey sincere condolences to family members of the two deceased for the loss of lives from the explosion and the traumatic injuries and experience by those who survived. The hospital would like to assure that it is doing all its best to ensure that the mother and the son recovers well and wish them quick recovery.
Furthermore, the Hospital Management would like to acknowledge the Heads of relevant Departments, the doctors and nurses, from the emergency department to surgical and orthopaedics for their determination to save the life of the young boy and attend to his injuries together with his mother.
Close to 30 NRH, doctors, nurses and support staff at the Emergency Department, Surgical, Orthopaedic and Operating attended to both the mother and the son. Though NRH workers attending the patients always maintain professionalism, the sorrow and distress from the accident is also felt.
