The government of New Caledonia has provided more than one tonne of fireworks, sound system and lighting equipment for the upcoming Melanesian Arts Festival.

Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Culture and Tourism Andrew Nihopara confirmed this in a media conference recently.

Mr Nihopara said, New Caledonia’s assistance reduces the cost of hiring local sound system and lighting equipment.

He said, the festival committee expects similar assistance from other neighboring countries.

“With our limited budget we couldn’t afford fireworks”, Mr Nihopara said.

“But then under the cooperation agreement , New Caledonia said we’re going to ship in the fireworks and its technical crew.”

A total of 800 delegates have confirmed their participation.

The Melanesian Arts Festival begins 1st July.
