The Prime Minister has announced a Media Excellence Award for Solomon Islands journalists.

The award, which begins next year, will come in the form of a fully funded tertiary scholarship for the winning journalist either at the Solomon Islands National University or a regional institution.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare announced the award last night in his keynote address at an official function to mark the 2015 Press Freedom Day for members of the Media Association of Solomon Islands.

Prime Minister Sogavare said the scholarship award reaffirms  his government’s commitment to supporting the development of the media industry.

The Prime Minister also announced the successful award recipient next year will undertake journalism studies at a tertiary institution in the country or abroad.
