The United Liberation Movement for West Papua (ULMWP) has welcomed the decision by MSG to grant West Papua observer status in the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

The movement says, after over 53 years of political struggle for the right to self-determination, West Papua is now recognised by MSG.

Speaking in a media conference today, ULMWP Representative Benny Wenda says, Melanesian leaders recognised West Papua as a nation by welcoming West Papua into the MSG.

He thanked Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and other Melanesian leaders for paving the path towards accepting West Papua into theMelanesia family.

“We commend the Prime Minister of Solomon Islands for definitely creating a path to the decision. We say thank you to five leaders for welcoming West Papua to the Melanesian family. This is the beginning of the process of international recognition for West Papua.”

Mr Wenda adds the struggle for the freedom of West Papua will continue.

“Our struggle for freedom and a free West Papua does not stop here. Without our Melanesia family firmly behind us we will now take our message to the world.”
