The 2016 New Year celebrations have been generally reported as a quiet one.

Residents from different parts of Honiara have reported peaceful celebrations.

In Makira Ulawa Province, Provincial Secretary Silas Sitai reported that new year celebrations in Kirakira, wards 9, 10 and 11 were peaceful.

He attributes this to community governance.

“It was peaceful and quiet especially at Kirakira and wards 9, 10 and 11. This was a result of the introduction of Community Governance in the communities, where all community zones have a village peace warden that is responsible for maintaining law and order.”

In Malaita Province, Provincial Police Commander Alfred Uiga reports, 2016 goes down on the RSIPF’s record books as among the most peaceful new year celebrations for many years.

“During the New Year’s festive season police have recorded it as one of the peaceful celebrations so far. According to our reports, no murder reports were recorded throughout the islands.”

Meanwhile, North West Guadalcanal stringer John Toki also reports a trouble free festive season.
