Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo has officially opened the new bailey bridge in China Town.

The bridge replaces the old one, destroyed during the April floods this year.

Funded by the New Zealand Government and installed by Downer New Zealand Limited along with local company Dalgro, the bridge will reconnect Honiara.

Speaking before cutting the ribbon to officially open the newly installed bridge yesterday, Prime Minister Lilo said the bridge will reconnect Honiara, which was the government’s first priority immediately after the floods.

He said the bridge will also help ease daily traffic congestions.

“And may I express that the opening of this bridge will once again fully reconnected the city and will ease the traffic jam in Honiara, and in that way it is important that the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and the police find ways so that you know, we can best use and manage the flow of traffic by using this bridge especially during peak hours.”
