The recent resignation of the outgoing City Mayor Mr. Alfred Fatai currently awaits an approval of the Minister of Home Affairs Hon. Manasseh Maelanga before Honiara City Council management declares nominations for the election of a new mayor.

Honiara City Council-City Clerk Mr. Charles Kelly confirms this to SIBC News today.

“Once his resignation is accepted by the Minister the Council Management team will then process the call for the nomination of a new Mayor, but at this point in time the Minister is yet to give his consent so that’s our position at the moment.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Kelly urges all Honiara citizens to stay calm as the city council is in the process to elect its new mayor.

“So Honiara citizens should look for a new mayor and services are as normal, it’s just the change of the leadership.”

Reasons for the resignation have been withheld.
