Election day set for April 3rd

The Solomon Islands Electoral Commission office has confirmed April 3rd as the official Election day for the upcoming National General Elections.

Chief Electoral Officer, Mose Saitala made the confirmation this afternoon following an earlier proclamation by the Governor General, Sir Frank Ofagioro Kabui today.

He said the proclamation was already prepared by way of a Gazette saying, he was merely conveying the official Election date.

“It is already being processed this morning for Gazetting, that is really the Governor General’s announcements of the General Election date. Today I am just merely conveying what the Governor General have already filed and announced by way of Gazetting the date for the general Elections,” he said.

“I am pleased to inform you that the Governor General His Excellency Frank Utu Ofagioro Kabui have now declared April the 3rd, Wednesday 2019 as the date for the next General Election. That is basically from today is fifty-seven days”.

He added, official nominations would open tomorrow and close on 20 February 2019.

“With that proclamations by the Governor General, he has also proclaimed effectively the timeline as from now until polling day on 3rd, again by way of Electoral Act the Election notices will be up in all our constituencies by tomorrow,” he said.

“Those will be published by our Returning Officers, that is in accordance with Section 59 of the Electoral Act, declaring nominations open from tomorrow onward. From that date until 20 of February which is Wednesday, that will be the last day for nominations.”
