Community leaders in North Malaita said the national government has failed to implement its flagship policy of Economic Growth Centers, EGC, in the province.

SIBC’s North Malaita stringer John Andrew Kiri reports people in the province are hopeless about the implementation of the projects as the government only has less than eight months before elections this year.

“The NCRA Government has only eight months left and it seems it had uttered empty words about the growth centres, so people are saying NCRA has failed to keep its promises.”

Mr Kiri adds, this is worrying as it can lead to increased urban migration, which may result in land issues and increasing anti-social behaviors in the urban centers.

“Increasing concerns now is that this would trigger rural-urban drift, which would eventually lead to illegal squatters into customary land on Guadalcanal, which is not welcomed by the people of Guadalcanal.”
